Professional Show Rider Reveals 9 Winning Showing Tips

We asked Equetech's brand champion, show producer, rider and prolific winner Helen Newbold for her showing secrets. In this blog, the professional show rider reveals nine winning showing tips! 
 

1. Preparation, Preparation, Preparation! 

There is a saying, 'You win your rosettes at home; you just go to the show to collect them', and it holds a lot of truth. Make sure you've practised the elements required in your individual show and perfected your in-hand trot-up. If a judge is going to ride your horse, it's always advisable to have a few different people sit on your horse beforehand so the horse is quite comfortable with the change of rider.
 

2. Tack Tips! 

It is always best to check your rule book for particular guidelines regarding tack. However, a well-fitted, comfortable show saddle (or GP/jump saddle if you are doing Working Hunter classes) that shows your show horse off is a great start. A sheepskin numnah and plain leather girth will complement the saddle perfectly. Ensure your stirrups are wide enough and the leathers adjustable for different ride judges.
 

3. Winning Showing Tips Include Winning Style! 

You need to make sure you have the correct attire for your class. A navy jacket is correct for a show hack or show pony; otherwise, it's a tweed jacket. Tie colour is an individual choice, but choose to complement your jacket and horse colour. Never underestimate the importance of well-fitted, smart show breeches, riding socks, and a stylish show shirt. 

 

4. Polish Those Boots! 

Use old-fashioned gloss polish instead of saddle soap. Get some good brushes to work the polish into the leather, and buff until the boots gleam! Not only will your boots shine beautifully, but you'll also increase their waterproofness in the process!

 

5. The Professional Show Rider's List

Make a list of everything you may need and pack the lorry the day before. If you are hiring transport, pack big laundry bags with everything you need to ensure you remember all the essentials! Check the forecast in advance and be prepared for all eventualities - be it a rain sheet or sun cream!

 

6. Plan Your Day 

Plan your day backwards from the likely start time of your class. Make sure to leave time for things like popping into the secretary's tent to collect your number. Don't spoil your enjoyment of the day by being short of time.
 

7. Show Off & Feel Proud

Walk into the ring with your head held high and a smile on your face. You've worked hard for this moment, so be proud of yourself and your horse and enjoy; it's your time to shine!

 

8. Learn From Feedback

Take into account any comments (positive or negative!) from the show judges, and don't be afraid to ask for advice from your judges or other professionals to improve your chances at your next show.

 

9. Have Fun!

Above all else, make sure you enjoy yourself!
