5 Ways To Beat The Clock This Winter!

5 Ways To Beat The Clock This Winter!

Equetech | October 27 2019

As horse owners, when the clocks change for winter, it doesn’t just mean reduced daylight hours it also brings other challenges, such as less time to enjoy our horses and ponies in the daylight and what can sometimes seem like a daily race against the clock to beat the onset of dark!

Fortunately, as horse owners ourselves, we share five ways to help you beat the clock this Winter with our tried and tested tips;

1.  Make up all your hay nets for the week at the weekend so you can save precious time during the week.

2.  Another way to save time is to prep your horse’s feed. Bag up each feed and store in a rodent proof tub with lid and simply pour the contents into your feed bowls. Making a week's worth of meals for your horse will save you so much time each day!

3.  Bank up their beds.  If you can, and your horse isn't going to trash or eat the extra bedding, use any extra time you might have to put in all the fresh clean bedding you need for the week, and then as the week goes on you can simply add more clean bedding down from the extra-large banks you made up when mucking out.

4.  If your horse is in full work, clipping your horse can save valuable time in grooming and drying. With the temperatures dropping you don't want to be hanging around waiting for them to dry after you have ridden, so if they are sweating up on a regular basis, consider clipping your horse to help them stay cool when being ridden and reduce extra drying time needed after each ride.

5.  Rugs: Do they really need a change of rugs every morning and evening?  It's a well-known fact that a wet rug will dry much quicker overnight if it stays on the horse, so if you want to save a few extra minutes occasionally consider leaving them in their turnout rug overnight when appropriate.
